Paper Train Your Puppy

So, having some trouble paper training your puppy? Here are some tips that may help you help your favorite new-found friend learn the RIGHT place to potty. Potty training isn’t easy, but keeping a few things in mind can help. First off, remember to be patient, because it won’t happen overnight.

A good place to start is your puppies diet. Stick to dry puppy food and water. Make sure your puppy has a regular diet. Maintaining a regular diet is key to helping your dog succeed at paper training. Feed and water your puppy at the same times every day, and remember to keep feeding and watering times about the same length. This will keep your puppy’s need to go semi-regular. One way to mess up your puppy’s schedule is to feed him/her table scraps. Don’t fall to this habit, as it will cause you a lot of trouble down the road.

When you put your puppy to bed, quarantine him/her off a small area to stay in, and cover the whole thing with fresh, dry paper. When the puppy goes on it, make sure and change it quickly. This way, the puppy will want to go on it again, instead of avoiding it because it is nasty. When the puppy gets used to this, start taking away a little bit of paper every so often. Pretty soon, your puppy will be left with only a little “potty spot”, and your job will be almost complete.

Then, you can move the paper a tiny bit, night after night, to the place in the house you specifically want it to be. Your puppy will probably not even notice it has moved! Paper training your puppy is actually not as hard as it sounds. Just like training methods such as dog clicker training, remember to be patient with your puppy, and don’t give up. You will succeed, and I guarantee both you and your puppy will be glad you stuck with it!
